A note on when this happens: it doesn't, not in any one decade. This is a composite New York, built from five decades laid on top of each other without apology — Nizer's courtroom and an inbox marked URGENT, a hunger strike and a Valium prescription, a rotary phone and a subpoena delivered by email. History finished with these four men a long time ago. It never bothered to also give them a consistent chronology, and neither will this.
