Christianity, Islam, Empire, and the Destruction of Non-Abrahamic Worlds
Here is the claim, and it will not be softened. Over the last two thousand years, Christian and Islamic empires and elites killed, enslaved, displaced, converted, occupied, and erased more human beings than the Nazis, the Communists, the Maoists, Pol Pot, and Chinggis Khan combined. They did it longer. They did it across more continents. And they did it not only by killing bodies but by destroying whole worlds. They marched into lands that were never Christian and never Islamic, and when the killing was done they called the survivors heathens, pagans, idol-worshippers, infidels, kaffirs, barbarians, Gentiles, goyim, and heretics. This is the long persecution of the unbeliever, and this essay is its indictment. It is not an apology. It is a charge sheet.
Understand the target precisely, because the precision is the argument, not a retreat from it. No ordinary believer is threatened here. No war is declared on any human being born into a faith he did not write. The accused is not the worshipper. The accused is the machine: the ideology, the priesthood, the clerical authority, the empire, the conquest, the colonial ledger, the slave manifest, and the ruling classes that grew fat on all of it. We are reading recorded history through a lens the conquerors never handed us, because they wrote the histories and kept the lens for themselves. Reading it back to them is not aggression. It is the first act of self-respect that every erased civilization was denied.
A word on who this is written for, so no one mistakes the address. It is not written to convert the true believer. The true believer cannot be reached by evidence, because a doctrine that calls itself final has already bricked up the only door through which evidence could enter. It is not written to win the approval of the conservative Christian, the orthodox Jew, or the devout Muslim, whose verdict was entered before the first sentence and will not be revised by the last. Their judgment is not sought, and it is not worth the seeking. This is written for the others: the Hindu and the Buddhist, the Zoroastrian and the pagan, the atheist and the materialist, the heirs of every drowned world, and everyone who refuses to sort the human race into the saved and the damned. It is a brief handed to the jury the executioner never let sit. Read it as one.
Time Is Not an Excuse. Time Is Evidence.
Begin with the famous monsters, and count all of their dead, not the convenient fraction. Nazism ruled for barely twelve years. In that time it murdered six million Jews. It also worked to death and slaughtered millions of others: over ten million Soviet civilians and prisoners of war, some three million non-Jewish Poles, Roma, disabled people, homosexuals, communists, and political prisoners. And the reckoning did not stop with the perpetrators. The Soviet Union alone lost around twenty-four million people in the war Nazism started. German cities were firebombed to ash, and millions of German civilians and soldiers died in the cataclysm the regime unleashed. Name all of it. That is what an honest accounting looks like when you refuse to itemize only the deaths you have been trained to mourn.
Soviet Communism lasted about seventy years. Maoism convulsed China for decades, and the Great Leap Forward starved an estimated thirty million people in three years. Pol Pot ruined Cambodia in under four years and killed between 1.5 and 3 million. Chinggis Khan’s storm killed on the order of tens of millions, and then it passed into history. Remember every one of these crimes. Now hold that same standard steady and turn it on the two systems that are almost never counted at all.
Because Christianity has been an active engine of conquest for two thousand years, and Islam for fourteen hundred. When a machine kills for centuries, you do not hand it a discount for moving slowly. Duration is not a mitigating circumstance. Duration is aggravation. The Nazi got twelve years and is remembered as the definition of evil. The religious empires got two thousand, and are remembered as civilization. That inversion is the swindle this essay exists to end.
And here the obvious objection collapses before it is finished. Someone will say the pagans killed too, the Mongols killed, the Aztecs killed, Ashoka drowned Kalinga in blood. True, and it changes nothing, because every one of those is a closed event. Ashoka conquered once, recoiled at what he had done, and the creed that came out of him was renunciation. The Mongol storm lasted three generations and then dissolved into the very worlds it had conquered, turning Muslim in Persia and Chinese in China. The Aztec knife stopped at Tenochtitlan and never claimed to be eternal truth. Each of these has a beginning and an end. No one alive invades in the name of Chinggis Khan or Ashoka or Huitzilopochtli; no priest issues the next campaign under their warrant, because their warrant is spent.
The Abrahamic case is the only one where the warrant is still open. The same theological license that shattered the idol at Somnath in 1026 is the license invoked to shatter idols in our own century, because finality does not expire. It renews the mandate to correct the unbeliever in every generation, forever. This is not one long crime; it is a doctrine that reloads. So the plea we suffered too, long ago is not a claim of moral symmetry. It is a category error. A catastrophe that ended and a catastrophe that is still running are not the same kind of thing, and the owner of the one still running does not get to borrow the closed ones as an alibi. You cannot break a living civilization and tell it, for consolation, that someone broke you three thousand years ago and stopped. The stopping is the whole difference. Be careful to keep this exact: what stays open is the license, the doctrinal warrant, not the conscience of every believer. Most of the faithful will never lift a hand. The indictment is of the warrant that never closes, not of the millions born beneath it.
The Worlds That Were Already There
The Americas were not Christian. Sub-Saharan Africa was not Christian. India was not Islamic. Persia was not Islamic. Central Asia was not Islamic. And Europe itself was not Christian. Every one of these was a living world before the missionary and the sword arrived, with gods, philosophies, laws, cities, sciences, art, metaphysics, and memory already in place. None of them was an empty space waiting for correction.
Christianity began in Jerusalem. Islam began in Mecca. When Christianity poured into Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, it was not coming home. When Islam poured into Persia, India, Central Asia, Africa, and southern Europe, it was not coming home. These were expansions into lands that were never theirs. That is not hatred. That is a map. And the map does not lie for anyone’s comfort. Begin, then, where the swindle is least expected: in Europe itself.
Europe Was Pagan First: The Forgotten Conquest of the Classical World
We are told Christianity civilized Europe. The truth is the reverse. Christianity conquered a Europe that already had Homer and Aristotle, Sappho and Seneca, the libraries of Alexandria and the schools of Athens, and it spent centuries dismantling that world. The classicist Catherine Nixey, in The Darkening Age, gathers the record of this destruction, much of it boasted about by the Christian sources themselves. Temples were smashed, statues beheaded, libraries burned, philosophers driven out. In 392 the great Serapeum of Alexandria, one of the wonders of the ancient world, was torn down by a Christian mob. In 415 the philosopher and mathematician Hypatia was dragged from her chariot by a Christian gang and butchered in the street.
These were not fringe fanatics. The men leading the destruction were the pillars of the Church. St. Martin of Tours went village to village demolishing temples and smashing altars to dust. The beautiful statue of Athena on the Acropolis was mutilated, beheaded, and set face down so Christians could trample it for eternity. Nixey’s book is a polemic, and its critics, Averil Cameron and Peter Thonemann among them, charge that she overstates how systematic the destruction was. Concede the point in full; it costs this argument nothing. The pre-Christian world had its own cruelties, and the exact tally will be argued forever. The core fact survives every correction: by the time the zealots were finished, an entire religious and philosophical civilization had been driven off the face of Europe. Today there are two billion Christians and not one living worshipper of Athena. That is not persuasion. That is annihilation.
The Conversion of Europe Was Not Voluntary
The pretty story is that Europe embraced Christianity. The record says Europe was beaten into it. In 782, Charlemagne, the Christian emperor Europe still honors with prizes and statues, had four thousand five hundred pagan Saxon prisoners beheaded in a single day at Verden. The number comes from his own court’s chronicle, the Royal Frankish Annals. His law code for conquered Saxony, the Capitulatio, made it a capital crime to refuse baptism, to cremate the dead in the old way, or to eat meat during Lent. Convert or die was not a slogan. It was written law, enforced over a thirty-year war of conquest that ended by deporting the Saxons wholesale and settling Franks on their land.
Then came the Baltic. From the twelfth century the Church launched the Northern Crusades against the last pagan peoples of Europe, the Wends, the Prussians, the Lithuanians, the Estonians, the Finns. The Teutonic Knights turned the eastern Baltic into a conquered mission field, and the Old Prussian people and their language were extinguished so completely that “Prussian” survives today only as the name of the Germans who replaced them. The Slavs, the Celts, the Balts, the Norse, all were brought to the font by the sword, the burnt grove, and the tax, and then the histories recorded it as a voluntary awakening. It was voluntary the way a confession under torture is voluntary. Europe was the first continent Christianity conquered, and Europe was lied to about it first.
Then Christian Europe Turned on Itself
Having erased its pagans, Christendom did not become peaceful. It turned the machine inward. The Albigensian Crusade exterminated the Cathars of southern France in the thirteenth century; at Béziers, when a commander was asked how to tell heretic from Catholic, the answer entered legend: kill them all, God will know his own. The Inquisitions burned dissenters for centuries. Then the Reformation split the faith and Europe drowned in its own blood. The French Wars of Religion, the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572, the Thirty Years’ War of 1618 to 1648 that killed on the order of eight million people and depopulated whole regions of Germany, all of it was Christian killing Christian over how to read the same book.
Ask the question the wars themselves pose. If the truth is so clear, why does it need so much blood? If God spoke plainly, why did His followers spend a thousand years slaughtering each other over what He meant? Catholic against Protestant, Protestant against Catholic, sect against sect, each certain, each armed, each damning the other. This is not the behavior of a verified truth. Verified truths do not raise armies. This is the behavior of competing authority, and competing authority always ends in a body count.
The Americas: The Largest Killing in Proportion to Humanity
Then Christian Europe crossed the ocean and did to two continents what it had done to its own pagans, at a scale the world had never seen. A major 2019 study in Quaternary Science Reviews estimated a pre-contact Indigenous population of about 60.5 million and calculated roughly 54.5 million dead within about a century of European arrival, a collapse near ninety percent. The researchers called it the largest human mortality event in proportion to global population ever recorded, exceeded in absolute numbers only by the Second World War. Now comes the exculpation, offered every time: it was mostly disease, not us. Grant the epidemiology in full. Disease was the largest single killer. It changes nothing, because disease is not an alibi. It is the murder weapon.
Apply the only test that matters, the test any court applies: but for the invader, do the dead die? They do not. The pathogens did not swim the Atlantic. They did not paddle ashore on their own. They rode in the bodies and ships of an empire that crossed the ocean for conquest, not for medicine, and there is no version of the century in which those diseases reach those continents without those ships. Remove the invader and you remove every one of the fifty million, the ones killed by the sword and the ones killed by the smallpox alike. Intent is not the test. If you push a man off a cliff you do not get to plead that gravity did the killing. The germ was the proximate cause. The Christian empire that carried the germ across the sea was the cause. A germ kills a body. Empire kills the world around the body, seizes the emptied land, forbids the gods, and then writes the deed as providence.
And the conquest had a signature cruelty: the dogs. The conquistadors brought armored war mastiffs trained to hunt human beings, a practice they called la montería infernal, the infernal hunt. They set the dogs on chiefs and captives to be torn apart alive, because watching a leader disemboweled made a village surrender. To keep the animals savage, some Spaniards fed them the flesh of the natives; one account records a man who kept quarters of Indians hanging on his porch to feed his dogs. This is not later invention. Bartolomé de las Casas, a Spanish bishop and eyewitness, recorded these atrocities in horror in the sixteenth century, in a Christian’s own account of what Christians were doing. The men who fed people to dogs then called those people savages.
And once, at least, the weapon was disease itself. At Fort Pitt in 1763, during Pontiac’s War, the British commander Lord Jeffery Amherst wrote to a subordinate: could smallpox not be sent among the disaffected tribes? We must use every stratagem in our power to reduce them. His officer replied that he would try to infect them with blankets. A militia captain’s journal at the fort records the deed plainly: out of our regard for them, we gave them two blankets and a handkerchief from the smallpox hospital; I hope it will have the desired effect. In the same correspondence Amherst wished he could hunt the natives down with dogs. This is one clearly documented case, not a continent-wide program, and the argument does not need it to be one. The but-for cause stands without any deliberate infection at all: the ships alone were enough. But Fort Pitt matters because it shows the will was there too. When these men could turn the epidemic into a weapon on purpose, they reached for it and wrote it down in their own hands. The disease did the killing by accident a thousand times and, at least once, on request. Either way the same fleet brought it, and the same men wanted the same result.
And Christian Europe never apologized for any of it. It declared the Indigenous spiritually inferior, took their land, broke their civilizations, and called them barbarians. This is the oldest trick of empire: wound the victim, then convict the victim of being uncivilized. The Doctrine of Discovery handed Christian powers a religious and legal license to invade, subjugate, Christianize, and seize the lands of non-Christian peoples. Kill them, occupy them, convert them, rename them, feed them to your dogs, and then award yourself the title of civilization. Who is fooling whom?
Two Slave Trades, One Silence
The transatlantic slave trade was another crime of Christian imperial civilization. About 12.5 million Africans were forced onto slave ships bound for the New World; about 10.7 million survived the Middle Passage into bondage, and nearly two million died on the ships alone. Those numbers do not count the dead from capture, the forced marches, and the slave forts, nor the generations born into chains. This was done overwhelmingly by Christian nations, blessed by Christian clergy, financed by Christian capital. And then Christian civilization dared to ask whether Africans were civilized. The question was the obscenity.
Now the trade that polite history buries. The Islamic slave trade was as vast as the transatlantic trade and it ran for far longer. Across the trans-Saharan routes, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean, an estimated ten to eighteen million Africans were enslaved by Arab and Muslim traders over roughly thirteen centuries, from the seventh century into the twentieth. One survey estimates around 12.5 million people trafficked eastward into Asia between 800 and 1900, rivaling the entire Atlantic trade over a far longer span. Enslaved men were castrated in enormous numbers to supply harem eunuchs, at a death rate so catastrophic it is one reason the surviving descendant population is so small. The Atlantic trade is taught in every school, and rightly. This one is barely taught at all. That asymmetry is not an accident of scholarship; it is the same reflex this essay diagnoses everywhere, the reflex by which one Abrahamic empire’s crimes are studied in daylight and the other’s are kept in the dark.
India Under the Cross: Extraction as Policy
European Christian colonialism also bled India. The Bengal famine of 1943 killed roughly three million people, and it was not a drought. Research reconstructing soil moisture found that, unlike every other major Indian famine of the era, the 1943 catastrophe did not coincide with agricultural failure. It was a policy famine. British authorities stockpiled and exported food, seized the boats and carts on which ordinary Bengalis survived, and blocked relief imports while people starved in the streets of Calcutta.
Listen to the ruler’s own voice. Told of the mass deaths, Winston Churchill reportedly asked why, if the shortage was so severe, Gandhi hadn’t died yet. He blamed the famine on Indians breeding like rabbits. There is the pattern again. Starve the ancient civilization, then insult the corpses. The victim was three thousand years old. The ruler was a racist with a war cabinet. And the contempt called itself the British Empire and got a statue.
Persia: How Islam Erased One of the Oldest Faiths on Earth
Now Islam as empire, and begin with Persia, because Persia shows the whole method in one long crime. When the Arab Muslim armies came in the seventh century, Persia was one of the great civilizations of the world: Zoroastrian, literate, ancient, the faith of Cyrus and Darius, a religion that had taught good and evil, heaven and hell, a final judgment, centuries before the Abrahamic faiths borrowed those ideas. The Sasanian empire was shattered on the battlefield at al-Qadisiyya and Nihavand, and then the slower conquest began, the one that does not end with a battle.
Fire temples were torn down or turned into mosques. The Zoroastrians became dhimmis, second-class subjects taxed with the jizya for the crime of keeping their own religion, barred from office, humiliated by law, their testimony discounted, their conversions to Islam rewarded and their conversions away from it punishable by death. Their sacred books were lost as their priesthood was starved of students. Over five centuries a religion that had been the soul of an empire was ground down into a persecuted remnant. Today the Zoroastrians of the world number only in the tens of thousands, many of them the Parsis who fled to India to survive at all. An entire faith was reduced to a museum piece, and then its defeat was rebranded as its inferiority. That is not the marketplace of ideas. That is the slow strangulation of one.
India Under the Crescent: Read It From the Conquerors’ Own Chronicles
India is the heart of this indictment, so here the argument does not rest on modern estimates at all. It rests on what the conquerors themselves wrote down, proudly, at the time. These are not Hindu grievances invented later. They are the boasts of the victors, preserved in their own court histories.
Somnath. In 1026, Mahmud of Ghazni stormed the great Shiva temple at Somnath, where perhaps fifty thousand defenders and pilgrims were killed over three days. Mahmud shattered the sacred linga with his own hands. He minted coins titling himself but-shikan, the idol-breaker, and by his admirers’ own accounts refused a fortune offered as ransom for the idol, because breaking it mattered more than the money. When the motive is stamped on the conqueror’s own coinage, we need not guess at it. Honest history notes that later Persian writers embellished the tale into a legend; the embellishment is theirs, and it only proves how the deed was celebrated rather than hidden.
Nalanda. Around 1193, Bakhtiyar Khalji’s forces stormed Nalanda, the greatest university on earth, older than Oxford by seven centuries, home to thousands of monks and one of the largest libraries in the ancient world. The monks were slaughtered. The library, the Dharmaganja, the Mountain of Knowledge, was put to the torch, and it is recorded that it burned for months. The account survives in Minhaj-i-Siraj’s Tabaqat-i-Nasiri, written from the Muslim side. The conquerors torched the memory of a civilization and then wrote down that they had done it.
Timur. In 1398, before the battle for Delhi, Timur’s army held on the order of one hundred thousand captives, and fearing they might rise during the fight, Timur ordered every one of them killed in a single day. He recorded the number himself. His own memoirs frame the whole invasion as holy war, to purify the land of the filth of infidelity and polytheism, even though Delhi was already a Muslim-ruled city. Then his men sacked Delhi for days and raised pyramids of skulls, and a contemporary wrote that afterward, for two months, not a bird moved its wing over the city. One hundred thousand killed before the battle began, on the written order of the man who bragged about it. There is no Hindu exaggeration here. There is only Timur’s own pen.
Vijayanagara. In 1565, at Talikota, a confederacy of Deccan Sultanates destroyed the army of Vijayanagara, the last great Hindu empire of the south, and beheaded its ruler on the field. Then they turned on the capital, Hampi, then likely the second-largest city in the world after Beijing, and looted and burned it methodically for five to six months until one of the richest cities on the planet was the field of ruins it remains today. The eyewitness accounts come from Persian and Portuguese chroniclers present with the victors.
Nader Shah, and Chittor. In 1739 Nader Shah’s army carried out the qatl-e-aam of Delhi, twenty to thirty thousand killed in six hours, hundreds of women choosing wells and fire over capture. Note the honesty of the arithmetic: tens of thousands in a day, not the inflated hundred thousand sometimes claimed, and the dead were both Hindu and Muslim, because a Persian Shia conqueror was sacking a Sunni-ruled city. And across the northwest, the rite of jauhar recurs like a wound: when a fort was about to fall, the Rajput women of Chittor and elsewhere walked into mass fire rather than be captured and enslaved. A civilization does not invent that rite for decoration. It invents it because the alternative, at the hands of the conqueror, was known and worse.
Kashmir. Between 1389 and 1413, Sultan Sikandar of Kashmir earned the same title Mahmud had coined, but-shikan. He set a demolition crew to work for a full year on the great Martand Sun Temple alone, and when the masonry would not yield, they burned it. He banned Hindu rites, taxed cremation, imposed the jizya, and drove the Brahmins of Kashmir to convert, flee, or die. The Rajatarangini, written by a Brahmin at the court of Sikandar’s own successor, records that there was no town, no village, no wood where the temples of the gods were left standing. It was the first erasure of the Kashmiri Hindus, six centuries before the last one.
These are examples across seven centuries. One could fill a book with a hundred more. The historian K. S. Lal put the demographic loss at sixty to eighty million across the centuries of Islamic invasion and rule. Other historians dispute the figure, and it does not matter, because this indictment never rested on it. The events above are not estimates. They are documented by the conquerors’ own scribes, coins, and memoirs. Mahmud minted his motive. Timur counted his own dead. Sikandar’s successor’s own court poet wrote it down. The killers wrote it down. We are not inventing a crime. We are reading their confession back to them.
And Europe Bled Under Islam Too
Lest anyone think this indictment spares one Abrahamic empire to flatter the other, Europe suffered under Islam as it made others suffer. Islamic armies took Spain and held parts of it for centuries, raided deep into France, held Sicily, besieged Vienna twice, and turned the Balkans into a conquered province for half a millennium, complete with the devshirme, the tax of Christian boys taken from their families, converted, and made into janissaries. The Barbary corsairs enslaved perhaps a million Europeans off the coasts of Italy, Spain, and even Ireland and Iceland.
The proof still sits on an altar. In the cathedral of Otranto, in the heel of Italy, the wall behind the altar is stacked with human skulls, hundreds of them, arranged behind glass. They belonged to the people of Otranto, beheaded in 1480 when an Ottoman army took the city and, by the traditional account, offered the survivors conversion to Islam or death. Some eight hundred chose death and were executed on a hill outside the walls. Scholars such as Francesco Tateo and Nancy Bisaha question whether the conversion ultimatum is the true frame, or whether this was the ordinary massacre of the defeated with many more sold into slavery. Take the milder reading; it does not help the accused. The skulls are real, the beheadings happened, and a European church still keeps its own dead on display as a memorial to what an Islamic conquest did to it. Europe did not author this crime, and Europe was not spared it. No one was spared. That is the point.
Not Persecution — Prosecution
Notice what all of this shares, across every continent and both faiths. It is not merely persecution. It is prosecution. The unbeliever is placed on permanent trial. The pagan is tried by the Christian. The Hindu is tried by the Muslim. The Zoroastrian is tried by his conqueror. The Saxon and the Prussian are tried by the missionary. The Indigenous American is tried by the man who set the dogs on his children. The defeated are ordered to justify their gods before the very system that burned their temples, stole their land, and renamed their descendants. No civilization on earth should have to stand forever in the courtroom of its own executioner.
And notice the sentence is served in eternity, because the conquest did not end when the killing stopped. The killing was the beginning. The renaming was the rest. Two continents carry the name of Amerigo Vespucci. A hemisphere of rivers and mountains and cities was rechristened for European saints over the buried names of the peoples who named them first, and the new names do not lapse. They hold. This is the second conquest, the one that runs after the armies go home: the map is taken, and then time itself is taken, so that the erasure is not merely a fact of history but a permanent condition. And permanence, eternity, the final word, the last judgment, is an Abrahamic category to its core. They conquered the land and then filed the defeat under their own idea of forever. The unbeliever is not only beaten in history. He is sentenced in an eternity he never accepted, in a court whose calendar his executioner wrote. Even in defeat, even in memory, even in time, they will not leave him alone.
And here is the fact that ends the argument, because it has no counterexample. Abrahamic civilizations have annihilated non-Abrahamic civilizations, and the opposite has never happened. Look at a map and the verdict is already written. No non-Abrahamic army ever invaded Mecca to shatter what stood there, ever sacked Medina, ever stormed Jerusalem to tear down the temple and mint coins about it. Their holy cities were left alone. Now read the other list: Rome and Athens, where the temples came down and Athena was beheaded; Varanasi and Somnath and Nalanda; Ctesiphon and the fire-temples of Persia; Alexandria and its library. Every one of these was a living sacred center of a non-Abrahamic world, and every one was entered, desecrated, and renamed by an Abrahamic empire that came from somewhere else and called the coming holy. The unbeliever’s holy places were invaded. The believer’s were not. That is not a body count a demographer can dispute. It is an atlas.
The traffic runs one direction only, and it runs there for a reason. No Hindu empire erased Christendom and renamed its continents. No Buddhist army extinguished Islam and stacked its skulls behind an altar. No Zoroastrian state ground the Church into a persecuted remnant and taxed it for the crime of prayer. When non-Abrahamic powers conquered, and they did, they absorbed, argued, syncretized, and in time dissolved back into the worlds they had entered, the way the Mongol dissolved into Persia and China. They did not carry a doctrine that required the other’s god to be false and the other’s temple to be rubble and the other’s defeat to be eternal. Only one side ever set out to end the other permanently. Only one side ever succeeded. That asymmetry is not an accident of who happened to have the better cavalry. It is the signature of the doctrine of finality itself, which cannot coexist with a rival because it defines itself as the last word, and a last word that tolerates a sequel is not a last word at all.
The Theft of the Mind
There is one more crime, and it is the most brazen. The theft of knowledge. These civilizations did not only conquer non-Abrahamic peoples. They absorbed, renamed, repackaged, and claimed the sciences, mathematics, medicine, and philosophy of the very peoples they were degrading. The conquered were denounced as heathens and idolaters. Their minds, meanwhile, were quietly looted. The believer condemned the unbeliever’s gods while living off the unbeliever’s intellect.
Take the numbers you used today. The so-called “Arabic numerals” are the Hindu-Arabic numerals, because the decimal place-value system and its zero came from India and were transmitted westward through Arabic mathematics into Europe. Al-Khwarizmi’s own famous treatise was on calculation with Hindu numerals; the title says it. Arabic-speaking scholars deserve real credit for transmission. But transmission is not origin. Erase the Indian source and keep only the Arabic label, and you have committed a small act of historical theft, and repeated it in every classroom since.
Zero is the deeper case. In the seventh century Brahmagupta treated zero as a number and set out the rules of arithmetic with zero and with negative numbers. Without zero and the Indian positional system there is no modern mathematics, no accounting, no physics, no computing, none of it. And the civilization that produced this miracle was later insulted as backward and idolatrous by conquerors who were literally counting their loot with its invention. First use the mind. Then spit on the civilization that grew it.
The same theft ran through Greek philosophy, which is the cruelest irony of all, because the Greeks were themselves a conquered pagan world. Greek thought was translated into Arabic, argued over in Islamic cities, carried into Latin Europe, and absorbed into Christian scholasticism. But Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, and Galen came from the same polytheistic world whose temples the Christians smashed and whose philosophers they exiled. Both Abrahamic civilizations drank deeply from Greek reason while damning pagan religion to hell. They drank from the well and cursed the spring. Indian medicine, Persian learning, Greek philosophy: usable knowledge, disposable people.
That is the deepest obscenity. First steal the land. Then steal the labor. Then steal the women, the children, the temples, the language, the memory. Then steal the knowledge and sign your own name to it. Then call the robbed civilization barbarian, idolatrous, heathen, infidel. This is not civilization. This is predation in liturgical robes.
The Binary Must End
For two thousand years the world has been crushed under a single suffocating logic. Believer and non-believer. Jew and Gentile. Chosen and unchosen. Saved and damned. Faithful and heathen. Momin and kaafir. Orthodox and heretic. Christian and pagan. Human and spiritually inferior. Every Abrahamic empire sorted humanity into these two bins and then went to work on the second one with fire and tax and sword, in Saxony and Prussia and Persia and India and the Americas alike.
Our Hindu and Buddhist misery is that we were judged by that binary. Our Hindu and Buddhist greatness, and the greatness of the pagan Greeks and Norse and Balts before they were erased, is that these worlds did not build themselves on it. At their best they do not compress all of humanity into one book, one prophet, one church, one ummah, one saved remnant and one damned remainder. They argue, doubt, negate, meditate, and revise. They produced Advaita and Madhyamaka and Nyaya and Yoga, materialism and devotion and skepticism, all at once, without a single compulsory revelation and without a hell for those who disagreed. Christianity is not Madhyamaka. Islam is not Advaita. The difference is not decorative. It is the difference between an open question and a closed fist.
The Civilizing Lie
Here is the whole machine in one breath. Kill them. Enslave them. Occupy their land. Burn their temples, their universities, their groves. Erase their languages. Mock their gods. Break their memory. Feed them to your dogs. Steal their sciences. Rename their mathematics. Translate their philosophy. Use their medicine. Then call them barbarians, and call yourself the light of the world. That is not civilization. That is conquest with a better vocabulary and a larger publisher.
The Historian Who Vanishes
There is a tell that gives the whole game away, and once you see it you cannot unsee it. Attack one Abrahamic tradition and the rivals rush in to help you, suddenly fluent in history. Attack Islam and Christians and Jews arrive with footnotes. Attack Christianity and Muslims and Jews arrive with footnotes. Attack the Catholics and the Protestants become superb historians of the Inquisition; attack the Protestants and the Catholics remember every drowning and every burned village. Everyone becomes morally alert the moment the accusation is aimed at someone else.
Each Abrahamic tradition remembers the crimes of the others with astonishing clarity. Christians remember Islamic conquest. Muslims remember Christian colonialism. Protestants remember Catholic persecution. Catholics remember Protestant violence. Jews remember Christian antisemitism. Christians remember Muslim antisemitism. Each side becomes a meticulous historian when the accused is someone else. But turn the very same standard back on its own scripture, its own empire, its own priesthood, its own ruling class, and the historian vanishes and the apologist arrives in his place. Then atrocity becomes context. Conquest becomes complexity. Forced conversion becomes misunderstanding. Massacre becomes politics that merely happened to wear a robe. And criticism becomes hatred.
This is not conscience. It is selective memory dressed as conscience. The evidence in this essay is not some outsider’s invention, and that is the point of naming this reflex now. Much of it was supplied by these traditions against each other, each one a diligent prosecutor of its rivals and a defense attorney for itself. All this essay does is refuse the double standard. It takes the clarity each tradition reserves for its enemies and turns it, evenly, on all of them at once, including the pagan and polytheistic and Dharmic worlds they jointly erased. One standard, applied without exception, is the whole demand. It is astonishing how much it sounds like an attack, only because it has so rarely been tried.
The Cure Comes From a Strange Quarter
The solution does not come from another revelation, another prophet, another holy book, or another priesthood. We have had quite enough of those. It comes from the modern discipline of knowledge. It comes from the Vienna Circle. It comes from verification. It comes from the ruthless elimination of coercive metaphysics from public life. It comes from asking one question before any doctrine is ever again permitted to rule over other human beings: how do you verify it?
The Vienna Circle’s logical empiricism was radically anti-metaphysical. It tied meaning and public knowledge to logic, evidence, and verification, and it treated grand unverifiable metaphysics as noise dressed up as wisdom. Karl Popper broke with the Circle on important points, above all by making falsifiability, rather than verification, the line between science and non-science. That disagreement is real and it matters. I remain unpersuaded that falsification is the sharper weapon here; the honest reader should know the debate is live and unsettled.
And that is precisely the point. Carnap did not assassinate Popper. Popper did not strap on a vest for the Vienna Circle. No philosopher of science has ever declared eternal hellfire for those who reject his demarcation criterion. No rationalist has ever demanded that unbelievers in verification be conquered by sword, tax, fire, dog, or forced conversion. Rational inquiry permits disagreement because it expects to be corrected. Revelation fears disagreement because it claims to be final. Science can say: I was wrong. Revelation says: God has spoken, and once God has spoken, disagreement becomes rebellion, criticism becomes blasphemy, and difference becomes a capital crime.
So put the sacred claims on the stand for once. Can Christianity verify that Jesus is the only son of God? Can Islam verify that Muhammad is the final prophet? Can either verify eternal hell, or divine revelation, or the damnation of unbelievers, or the right of one book and one prophet to rule all of humanity? No. Not one of these is a verified truth. They are revealed claims, and revealed claims are precisely the kind of thing that must never again be handed an army, a treasury, or a foreign policy.
Believe them privately if they comfort you. Study them, recite them, cherish them. But they must not become law. They must not become empire. They must never again be the license to conquer, convert, enslave, occupy, or erase, and above all never again the license to loot a civilization’s knowledge and then convict that civilization of being spiritually beneath you.
One Standard, One Species, One Earth
The hope is materialist and monist. There is one human species, one shared earth, one public world, one field of suffering. There are many cultures, many languages, many experiments in how to live, and that plurality is a glory, not a heresy. But no human being stands above another on the strength of an unverifiable revelation, and no human being sinks below another for declining someone else’s metaphysics. We do not need an eternal hell to become moral. We do not need a chosen people to become human. We do not need infidels, heathens, kaffirs, Gentiles, goyim, pagans, or heretics. We need human beings.
That is the final indictment. The Christian and Islamic imperial systems did not merely kill more, over longer, than the Nazis, the Communists, the Maoists, Pol Pot, and Chinggis Khan combined. They erased the pagan world of Europe, strangled the ancient faith of Persia, depopulated the Americas, bled India for a thousand years, ran two slave trades across two oceans, and turned even Europe into a victim of Islam and a graveyard of its own dissenters. They stole the knowledge of the peoples they degraded. They turned whole civilizations into permanent defendants before the tribunal of revelation. They destroyed living worlds and then called the survivors barbarian, and had the historians agree.
The standard must be one standard. No collective blame for ordinary people. No revenge. No hatred of the faithful. But no immunity either, not for ideologies, not for elites, not for empires, not for sacred violence, in any of its uniforms. And no more selective memory, no more clarity reserved for the crimes of rivals and amnesia granted to one’s own. No unverifiable revelation has the right to prosecute the world. No private metaphysics has the right to erase a public civilization. And no theology, however old, however beautiful, however sincerely believed, has the right to destroy a people, plunder their knowledge, and then stand over the ruins and call the survivors barbarian. We are done standing in that courtroom. We are opening the window and asking the only question that was ever fair: how do you verify it?
